History of Palacio de Elorriaga
Noble home
The building where Hotel Palacio Elorriaga*** currently is today dates back to the late Sixteenth century. Originally, it was a traditional noble home from the plains of Álava. It took three years to restore, with the process paying tribute to simplicity.

Crossing point
The local people know the building as “Elorriaga Palace”. This term was coined because, back in the day, Elorriaga was a mandatory crossing point for goods sent to Vitoria. There used to be a customs office and those who went past the place knew what is now the hotel as the palace of the town of Elorriaga.
Spanish Civil War
In its long transition throughout the centuries, the palace has witnessed many historical events, such as a front for the French in the Peninsular War, and been home to many different people, including members of the clergy and prisoners during its time as a prison run by priests. It was also used as a shelter during the bombing raids of the Spanish Civil War due to its proximity to the old Salburua air base, which was used by the planes which bombed the town of Gernika.
